Savikoti Agro OÜ, belonging to the Oilseeds group, was awarded an easy first place for its two rye fields in a cultivation competition this year.
Savikoti Agro is a company from Viljandi county, Pärsti parish, active in agriculture. The company is part of Oildseeds Agro group. The total harvest area of the whole group is 2,400 ha.
According to Urmas Nurmsalu, the Managing Director of Oilseeds Agro, rye has a fixed place in the crop rotation of the company – each year 300 to 400 ha of rye is sowed.
Savikott owns 993 ha of arable land, which has been divided to 132 units. 240 ha of it is under a meadow, and 180 under rye. The company participated in the cultivation competition for the first time this year. “On the recommendation of good colleagues. They thought I might have good chances with my fields,” Nurmsalu goes to explain why he registered his two rye fields to participate in the competition.
The preceding crop on both fields was summer rape. The seed was previously put in uncultivated land in the end of August, during the spring the fields were fertilized with ammonium nitrate and harrowed. Also, necessary seeding protection works were carried out.
There is minimised soil cultivation taking place on the fields of both Savikoti Agro and other companies of Oilseeds.
The fields participating in the competition indicated good harvest already during the summer, but the end result surprised everybody: rye ‘Agronom’ (9 ha) gave 7.1 and ‘Mataodr’ (23 ha) 7 tons per hectare.
Savikoti Agro was followed by Estonia OÜ (‘Vambo’ 6.2 t/ha) and Voore farm (‘Matador’ 5.1 t/ha).
